The first point you need to understand is that it is crucial to have a strategy when doing article marketing. You cannot just write something about a topic, publish it and expect your traffic to double. This could have worked years ago but will no longer work now.

There are different article marketing strategies and each one implies different ways of writing, submitting and promoting your articles for maximum results.

Why do you need an article marketing strategy?

Well, let’s take a step back and take an example. If you do not have a strategy, you choose a topic in your niche, you write the article title, the body of the article, and the resource box with a link or two back to a page of your website. You do a submission of the article, say, to a good article directory such as EzineArticles. And you stop there. You might get a few visitors from the directory, if you are lucky, and basically the benefits of this article will have been a few visitors to your site, and one backlink. Nothing to get excited about. So, how to do article marketing, you say.

If you have a strategy, you will have a plan, you will do some keyword research, write a good title, you’ll write the article body and resource box a certain way, you will submit and distribute the articles following specific tactics, and you will also promote your articles a certain way, because you have a strategy and you know what you are doing and why.

Basically there are 2 article marketing strategies:

• Article marketing for traffic

In this strategy, you will focus on getting the highest number of click-throughs, meaning a high number of readers will be compelled to click on the link in your article resource box and visit your website. Your goal here will be to write high quality, reader pulling articles and to publish them on high quality websites in your niche or in related niches.

Note that your goal will no longer be to get your articles ranked in the search engines (this used to work well until 2011), as this doesn’t work anymore for most keywords. This strategy is detailed in Part 2 of these article marketing tips.

• Article marketing for SEO

In this strategy you will want to maximize the number and quality of backlinks to your site that come from your articles. Your goal here is ONLY to get backlinks to the content on your website. If you know about SEO, having a high number of quality backlinks to your site will improve your site’s rankings in Google, Yahoo and Bing. And in many cases you can achieve good rankings for a page almost only with a good article marketing campaign, if you do it right. Then, you can also mix the two strategies above: there is a way to maximize the traffic you get to your site and at the same time getting a high number of quality backlinks to your site. If you can produce high quality articles that pull readers in and get them to click on the link in your resource box, as well as applying the techniques of the article marketing for SEO strategy, you can see great boosts in traffic and really get awesome results for your online business.
