In this article marketing SEO strategy your goal is to get the highest possible number of quality backlinks to your site with your articles.
A quick word here to avoid any confusion. Your goal with this strategy is NOT to get your ARTICLES ranked in the search engines, but to get your WEBSITE CONTENT ranked in the search engines. Your articles are here to promote your website content and help it rank high in the organic search results by providing quality backlinks to the pages of your site. This is article marketing for SEO of your website, not of your articles. Thus your goal with your articles in this strategy is ONLY to get backlinks to the content on your website.
For those of you who are not very familiar with SEO, here is how this works. At the end of an article there is a resource box, with a link (or two) back to your site. This is called a backlink.
To keep things simple, we can say that the more quality (quality being determined by relevance and authority of the page where there is the link) backlinks you have to a page on your site, the higher this page will rank in the search engines. So if you publish a relevant article on Articlesbase.com for example, the backlink to the page of your site has a lot of value in the eyes of Google because this site has authority for Google, and this backlink contributes to the ranking of this page of your site in the search results.
And you can do a good SEO with article marketing if you do it right.
Here are the 3 pillars of a successful article marketing strategy for SEO:
1. Unique articles
2. Anchor text link or link to domain in the article body and/or the resource box
3. Many articles on a variety of websites
Note: resource box links do no longer work as well as they used to. In 2012 it is important to be able to put links within the article itself.
1. Writing unique articles
If you decide that you are doing article marketing for SEO, then you absolutely need to write unique content.
Why? Because if your content is unique, the backlinks to your site in your article will have value in the eyes of the search engines. If the content is not unique, then the links will be ignored. And by unique I mean as close as possible to 100% unique.
Let’s take an example to clarify this point because it is absolutely crucial in 2012.
Let’s say you publish an article you wrote yourself about kitchen remodeling (or whatever) on 3 article directories, with the same resource box with one backlink to the same page of your site. You will have 3 same articles on the web and Google will count one backlink as “valid”. Now if you submit this article to just one article directory you will still have one backlink. But if your article is not unique (meaning you used some PLR article for example), your backlinks will be ignored so you will not have any SEO benefit from your article submission. The reality is a little bit more complicated than this, but basically this is how it works.
The good news is that you don’t have to write and rewrite all your articles yourself; you can get them from a service like The Leading Articles, or you can use Article Builder. These are great to get high quality articles to submit to blog networks and other sites, and they are a must for anyone serious about getting high rankings.
2. Good anchor text in the article resource box
If your goal is a better SEO with article marketing then you’ll need to work on your anchor texts in your articles and resource boxes.
Why? Because Google gives a high importance to the text of the links coming to your website pages and it helps you getting your website content ranked higher.
The anchor text can be a keyword, a variation of a keyword, or a full URL. This is important to mix all 3 types of anchor texts to keep things natural. And this is especially true after the Panda updates, which have been frowning upon sites that obviously try to manipulate rankings.
Example: if you want to rank a page of your site for the keyword “kitchen remodel ideas”, the text of the link in your article body or your resource box should be “kitchen remodel ideas “ most of the time, and also “best kitchen remodel ideas”, “kitchen remodel ideas for dummies”, or any long-tail keywords containing the main keyword, and also www.yourdomain.com a few times.
3. Many articles on a variety of websites
If you can publish more unique articles you will get more backlinks to your content and thus your article marketing campaign will be more successful in terms of SEO, which is your goal in this strategy.
This is why it is important to be consistent in your article writing and publishing, to have a daily mode of operation and to be consistent over time with your article marketing efforts.
Then, it is also crucial to submit your articles on a wide variety of websites, and not to the same directories all the time. Many marketers, and I also did this mistake when I got started, tend to publish 20 articles on EzineArticles because this directory has a lot of authority with Google (well, it had a lot at the time). Although this is quite true, it is MUCH better to publish one article to EzineArticles, one to Examiner, one on a Wiki site, one on Hubpages, one on a blog, etc., because the variety of sites that have backlinks to your website is much more important to Google and will help your rankings a lot more than having 20 articles on EzineArticles.
And you should also not forget blog networks such as ArticleRanks or BuildMyRank or Linkvana. Don’t forget that there is a lot more to article marketing than article directories!
FAQ:
- What about quality? Do I have to produce high quality articles if my goal is only to have backlinks to my website?
In this article marketing SEO strategy you don’t need to do any keyword research for your articles and they do not have to be of high quality, because you are after the backlinks more than anything else. As it is more time consuming to produce quality articles, you’ll want to focus more on the quantity of backlinks you can obtain.
I have the opinion that you should keep your top quality content for your own sites or for guest blog posting or articles on top quality niche related sites that will bring you traffic because they have tons of targeted visitors.
BUT this doesn’t mean you should produce crap or poorly spun articles. You should not. It is far better if you can still produce quality articles because they will get accepted much better by site owners and webmasters.
- Should I submit one unique article to one website or to many? If Google just picks the links of one unique article, why would it be useful to submit them to many directories and blogs?
You know that one same article will only give you credit for one backlink. This is why article rewriting and spinning is a must, and we’ll get back to this in Module 3 of this tutorial.
